Vagus Nerve: De-Stressing Children and Adults Alike

As a practitioner and as a parent of an additional needs child, my personal life experiences affect my professional and vice versa. One most enlightening effect of having my son, who was quite sensitive to certain noises or fearful of certain states was that I had to look for a solution to ease his system so that he could self-regulate. I learned intuitively and through practicing that I could balance my son using biofeedback to activate and balance his vagus nerve. What transpired was amazing. He was able not to just tolerate but still soothe and transition his focus back to what he was doing instead of focusing on barking dogs, for instance.

Balancing Fear and Over-sensitivities through Vagus Nerve

Using this information I quickly started applying my knowledge on my clients. They calmed quicker. Anxiety reduced, digestion improved. Why, you ask? Because the vagus nerve is the 10th cranial nerve and it is our longest winding nerve affecting heart rate, breathing and because it wraps around most of the organs it therefore affects our digestion.

When we have a stress response, like my son to the sound of a dog barking, we choose to go into fight or flight or stress and digest depending on how “balanced” we feel. When we are more balanced and less stressed, it is easier to respond. However, when life circumstances that are out of our control happen, like #covid-19, loss of a loved one, etcetera stress ensues. This puts us back into fight and flight, making us more reactive. Even as adults, things that we could handle before re-trigger us along with new triggers and we become overly sensitive. This oversensitivity expresses itself either as anxiety, depression, sleeplessness, allergic reactions, and or digestive issues.

Adults and children alike respond to having their vagus nerve stimulated and balanced. Working on the vagus nerve through biofeedback returns their bodies back into the rest and digest state. Adult clients and parents of children I have worked on have commented that they or their children have noticeably become less reactive, that they pause and respond instead. Mood even elevates, becoming calmer, even happier.

There are ways of easing yourself from stress. Biofeedback has helped our family and my clients do that.

Mysteries

Mysteries… They happen to us all the time if we choose to be aware. But how or why they happen is part of the wonder of mysteries. By definition, a mystery is “Something strange or not known that has not yet been explained or understood. Difficult to explain is difficult or impossible to understand or explain.” (1)

Lately I have been faced with a lot of amazement and wonder. I have an unconventional, unusual occupation. Typically, it means that I get to meet all different kinds of people from various walks of life who are searching for the same thing: healing. However, as much as someone can say that they are looking forward to healing, how the individual chooses to do so, varies from person to person. That is what tends to be the most mysterious and wondrous  part of my job.

Because individuals are just that, people who come from different cultures, home environments, educational, professional and religious backgrounds, how they process their healing is just as different.

Take for instance, I have a client that when he contacted me, originally didn’t believe in what I did, and was doing it to appease his spouse. I began the healing and noticed that when I shared what I was receiving intuitively regarding his medical condition, it caused heart palpitations. It took me learning that he was better off processing his own healing in whatever form that took, versus me sharing what was coming up as I was working on him.

I recently had a client that after three attempts of making an appointment and rescheduling, finally relinquished and fulfilled her appointment. It was a most cathartic healing for her as she quickly realized why she had resisted for so long. As she was on the massage table, she kept commenting on all the physical changes she was feeling and remarked how she was “blown away.”

And yet I had another healing session where the person could feel and see changes as the session was in process. However, the next day, couldn’t relax enough to take in the session just as it was intended. She had her own expectations of how it should be, so I needed to facilitate that “letting go” over the phone the next day. What is most mysterious to me is the information I get and how it varies for each individual. I help people let go of negative feelings, memories, and effects of abuse.

Most recently I had a session that left me mystified. A client called after seeing my brochure elsewhere and scheduled a session. I facilitated some major body work, some became very uncomfortable and as I was doing so I was sharing all the intuitive information I was receiving. A couple days later, she traveled out of state for a few weeks and had had back surgery while she was gone. Upon her return, she made another appointment. This time, I didn’t receive as much information. At the conclusion of the session, she remarked, “I remember that the last session, shortly after laying your hands on me you said ‘You feel broken in half.’ It’s stuck with me.” It turns out that her back surgery was a preventative and she had two steel rods put into her back to prevent her back from essentially, “being broken in half!” Needless to say, I was humbled.

What is wondrous is how the information I get varies by each individual.   How people emotionally process afterwards: some are much calmer and energized, some are emotional and others physically let go, each differs per person per session. It is always a mystery that will unfold as to how much lighter and happier that individual will be after their healing.

Building a Stronger Immune System

People with Down syndrome have compromised immune systems as a result of having the chromosomal structure that they do.(1) After Jack had open heart surgery at 5 months old, our pediatrician at the time recommended that we put Jack on a multivitamin with iron. After having experienced all that we had been through, having Jack survive and recover from open heart left us blinded and accepting all recommendations from physicians.

Being on the multivitamin with iron actually effected Jack and made him constipated. The addition of iron to his daily intake made it difficult for Jack to have easy bowel movements. Not only that, we noticed that he wasn’t any healthier to fight off viruses. We tried different multivitamin formulas with minerals, even though I was of the philosophy that, we should get our vitamins from our diet. Because of his immunodeficiency, I wanted to make sure that Jack was getting the best vitamin absorption. Traditionally, our bodies do not absorb vitamins that are in pill form as we would in powder or liquid form. (2) We absorb 90-98% of vitamins in liquid or powder form, compared to the 3-25% from pill form.

Not only did constipation result from vitamin supplementation, we soon noticed that Jack’s skin on his elbows and knees demonstrated eczema type symptoms and once we discontinued any vitamin supplementation, these symptoms dissipated.

Our insurance for Jack changed and therefore caused us to have to seek out a new pediatrician. In doing so, what we had taken for granted as being prudent recommendations, our new physician made us more aware, enlightened. For example, it had been recommended to us that we put Jack on Miralax, also known as polyethylene glycol, for his constipation at a year old. When we asked what the side effects were, we were told simply, “none.”

Our new pediatrician, although she also wrote us a prescription for the Miralax, soon said to us, “You need to get him off of that.” It wasn’t that she said it, but how she said it that made me wonder why she would have a different recommendation. So of course, I did a web search. What I found astounded me:

“In 2008, the FDA tested eight batches of Miralax because ‘many of the reported adverse events were classic symptoms of ethylene glycol ingestion.’ Ethylene glycol (EG) and diethylene glycol (DEG) are ingredients in antifreeze so, in other words, the government tested the laxative after receiving reports of children exhibiting symptoms of antifreeze poisoning following their use.” (3)

Appalled and wanting a more homeopathic solution, I again visited our chiropractor who happened to have a blend of Chinese herbs mixed in easy to take gel capsule form from Dr. Chi called OxiPower. It actually took a couple days, but it helped Jack go to the bathroom much easier.

Our solution became a mixture of essential oils, Chinese herbs, and energy work.

Quite simply, the mixture of these has kept us from visiting the doctor’s office frequently. In fact, Jack’s constipation issues resolved. His times of being sick, not only shortened in duration, but also got less exacerbated. He now recovers from being sick quite quickly.

Basil Combats Cold and Flu Symptoms

It’s flu season, and we all have to do all we can to remain healthy. My husband and I choose not to get vaccinated or to vaccinate our son. It’s our choice, and choose that because by the time that the flu vaccine is administered to us, it may or may not be made of the strain that is affecting the U.S. and is made with thimerosal, a Mercury based derivative.
When I first heard of Basil essential oil I didn’t quite understand the attraction anyonewould have to using it. Every time I thought of it all I associated it with was a good Italian sauce, marinara etc.

“There are many benefits of basil essential oil (including the improvement in the following conditions): (1)

  1.  acne                       5. colds                                   9. increase alertness                       13. indigestion
  2.  anxiety                   6. improve digestion               10. fatigue                                        14. sinusitus
  3.  enhance mood       7. coughs                                11. gout
  4. bronchitis colds       8. depression                         12.   soothe muscle aches

Within the last two weeks both my son and I have needed basil essential oils for different reasons. I happen to be quite sensitive around this time of year due to red tide. It doesn’t matter if it is not directly in our county, it matters that it is around us and I go into respiratory distress, especially at night. I had the most difficult time breathing the other night and needed help. I asked my lovely husband to rub carrier oil with a couple drops of basil essential oil on my back in the lung area and within minutes we both noticed a difference. I was breathing clearer and he even commented on how the scent forces you to breathe! I was able to fall asleep and breathe easily through the night.

Our son came home from school run down and ended up going to bed early. He awoke in the middle of the night and after hearing his raspy voice and raspy breathing, I immediately grabbed the basil essential oil. I rubbed it on his throat that was hurting, his back, chest and feet. Because he was having difficulty falling asleep again I rubbed Frankincense essential oil down his spine(think central nervous system) and within minutes not only was he breathing easily, he had fallen asleep. When he awoke in the morning, no one would have known that he had respiratory distress just 4 hours earlier! When asked, he said his throat no longer hurt. I happened to speak with his teacher the next day, who was so impressed on commented how much work he got out of Jack due to his alertness and calmness.
A year and a half ago, Jack was suffering from recurrent ear infections, three almost back to back. It was recommended to us, by someone selling essential oils, to put basil and melaleuca (tea tree oil) on a cotton ball and insert into our son’s ear. At that time, I didn’t have basil essential oil readily available and fortunately, and since then, Jack has not had another ear infection so we have not had the need to try the effectiveness of this solution.

As impressive and effective as basil essential oil proved to be in alleviating our respiratory symptoms, we did use another oil in conjunction: oregano oil. (That will be its own post on its benefits.) The dual combination definitely knocked out all that we were going through.

Please note, that just like any medicine, more is not better when using any essential oil. Although essential oils are homeopathic they are extremely powerful and concentrated. They are potent and definitely need to be diluted with a carrier oil like jojoba, grapeseed, etc. when used. Not all essential oils are made equally, so please select your oils carefully. If you happen to have a reaction, which may occur depending on your sensitivity and oil being used, please do not rinse with soap and water, instead dilute area with more carrier oil. Doug, Jack nor I take any prescription medications. If you do, please speak with your healthcare professional and discuss any possible interactions and possible side effects of mixing the two.

Snot Really: How Bamboo Extract Reduced Enlarged Tonsils and Adenoids

We recently had to take our son in for a sleep study. “There is a 50-100% incidence of obstructive sleep apnea in individuals with Down Syndrome, with almost 60% of children with Down syndrome having abnormal sleep studies by age 3.5 – 4 years. The overall incidence of obstructive sleep apnea increases as children grow older.” 1
Children with Down syndrome typically have a form of sleep apnea, whether it be obstructive or central. Explained very simply, obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA, is just that, your body is obstructing your air passage ways because of tongue or enlarged tonsils and adenoids. Central sleep apnea is different because it means that you brain isn’t communicating effectively with your body while you are sleeping and causes you to stop breathing.

We did it mostly because for about the last two years our son wakes multiple times throughout the night. He doesn’t stay in his room and cry for us, which is rare. Rather, he prefers to awaken, open his door and walk quickly across our place to our room and go to Daddy’s bedside and insist he go to bed with Jack. Doug and I take turns sleeping in Jack’s full size bed. He doesn’t snore, and if he does it’s because he’s sick and therefore congested.

We got the results from Jack’s sleep study and it proved that Jack had mild obstructive sleep apnea. Having been in the respiratory industry, I was relieved that it wasn’t central sleep apnea. A few days later I got a call from our son’s neurologist who wanted to put him on Singulair since his tonsils were enlarged. My husband did his due diligence in research on Singulair and read the side effects, one of them being “agitation including aggressive behavior or hostility.”2

Since we were already experiencing some aggressive behavior at school and sometimes at home, my husband and I agreed after researching the side effects that we weren’t willing to do anything but try a much more homeopathic method.

I immediately discussed my dilemma with my chiropractor who suggested Bamboo extract. We originally started our 5-year-old on half a capsule a day in his apple sauce or yogurt, and after a week upped the dose to a full capsule. I noticed a difference within two days. We had a follow up appointment with the neurologist and within a week’s time she noticed a considerable difference in his tonsil size and remarked, “this is as good, if not better, than Singulair.” She was so impressed she was going to refer another patient, who would rather use a more holistic approach, to our chiropractor’s office so she could get the same product for the same symptoms.

She suggested we keep him on the bamboo extract for one month, stating that it was like he was on antibiotics and didn’t want his immune system to be compromised and not be able to do what it’s supposed to do on its own. After talking with my chiropractor, she asked me, “have any of the antibiotics Jack has been on reduced his tonsils?” The answer was simple, “no.”

What’s most interesting is that my son had a hearing evaluation done back in mid-March, where his hearing in his right ear showed a 30% reduction (hearing loss). We had his hearing retested four months later, in July, as we had started the bamboo extract in the beginning of June. His hearing showed no compromise and tested perfectly normal in both ears. At that doctor’s appointment, the Ear Nose and Throat doctor remarked how “tiny” his tonsils were.
What I have learned about Bamboo extract is that it has a combination of amino acids, vitamins and minerals as its properties which actually helps to build up the immune system and is especially helpful with colds and respiratory disorders. It is now staple in our medicine cabinet whenever any of us is fighting a cold.
